Amos W. Schultz

Amos “Mick” Schultz died peacefully on July 3 in Stillwater, just a month shy of his 99th birthday. Mick was born in Stillwater and raised on the family homestead in West Lakeland Township that was established by his immigrant grandparents in the late 1890s. Mick’s father died when he was just 12. Along with his beloved mother, Theresa, and with some help from his siblings, they carried on farming until he purchased the farm from his mother. In 1940 he met and married Helen McNamara of Cylon, Wisc. They had eight children. Along with his sons, Mick continued to farm until his retirement at age 70. Upon selling the homestead, he and Helen moved to a condominium at Sunnyside in Stillwater where they enjoyed many happy years until her death in 2005. They were charter members of St. Charles Church in Bayport. Mick continued to live on his own and spent his summer months tending a large garden and an acre of sweet corn he grew on a few acres he retained from the farm. People from Bayport and beyond looked forward to his “extra sweet sweetie” corn and amazing tomatoes that he sold from his beloved Ford Bronco parked next door to his favorite bar, the Greystone, every summer close to 20 years. When he could no longer manage the large garden, Mick continued to grow tomatoes from seed in his condominium, close to 100 of them, that he would give to family and friends. The 96 tomato plants he grew this spring came with him when he moved to Croixdale Assisted Living this April. Mick loved meeting and talking with people and was known for his quick wit and incredible memory. He could be easily coached to recite his favorite poems. He loved performing in 4H and school plays as a boy and said that were it not for farming, he might have liked a career on the stage. He is survived by his children, Mary Carol (David) Anderson, Hudson, Kathy (Bob Sorenen) Schultz, Anchorage, Meg (Kevin) Heaton, Hudson, Dan (Sylvia) Schultz, Waynesville, N. C., Will Schultz, West Lakeland, Tom (Julie) Schultz, Lakeland, Minn. along with grandchildren Rick Paukert, Craig Paukert, Jon Soronen, Matthew Soronen, Katie Heaton, Cory Heaton, Nadine Ray, Barnaby Ray, Dillon Schultz, Solly Schultz, Mindy Schultz and Joe Schultz, and several great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife Helen, sons Michael and Amos Michael, parents William and Theresa Schultz and siblings Margaret Richert, Myrtle Seim and Joseph Schultz. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday, July 9 at St. Charles Church in Bayport at 11 a.m. There will be an hour visitation prior to the Mass. There will be a private burial in St. Michael’s Cemetery in Bayport. Memorials are preferred.
