Bernie passed away on Saturday, April 22, 2006, after an extended illness. He was born on April 13, 1934, in Seven Mile Creek Township, Wis., and was raised in Mauston, Wis. Bernie held a master's degree in industrial education, taught in the Stillwater School District for 37 years and had the distinction of instructing in all three high school buildings. He taught industrial technology, driver's education and community education courses. Bernie maintained his enthusiasm and love for the teaching profession and his students throughout his career and into retirement. He is credited with keeping many young adults interested in school over the years and focused on successful vocational careers. Bernie, also known as "Mr. Fixit," enjoyed spending time with family at his Brainerd cabin, traveling, tinkering on his home and helping others. He always "aimed high in steering to get this big picture" and faced his illness with courage, humor and an abundance of time for his family. He was a steadfast role model for those in his life. Bernie is survived by his wife of 51 years, Helen; five children and their families, Greg (Patty), Stephen, Brian and Scott; Dan (Janelle), Brianna, Jenna and Nick; Michelle St. Claire (Mark) Pentland, and stepson, Alex; Tom (Doreen), McKenzie and John; Stacey (Brian) Albin, Jacob, Owen and Gavin; and many dear friends and relatives.
