DOROTHY BERGE, sculptor and gallery owner, died Tuesday, January 13, 2009 in Stillwater, MN. Born May 8, 1923, in Ottawa, IL. Preceded in death by parents Thorvald and Alphena Berge, brothers Rolf and Fritjof and sisters Helen and Carol Eastwood. One of the first American women to create large-scale metal sculpture, Berge also worked for the Walker Art Center, the Museum of Modern Art and later in life owned an art gallery in Stillwater. Her sculpture is in collections across the country including the Walker, Minneapolis Institute of Art and the High Museum in Atlanta. A graduate of St. Olaf College, Berge was proud of her Norwegian heritage. She is survived by nieces and nephews Phil Eastwood, Jane Eastwood (Carol), Sue Selbitschka (Dennis), Tom Eastwood (Clair), Matt Eastwood (Dee Ann), great nieces and nephews Sara, Chris, Liz, Ben, Sam, Erik and great, great nephews Nick and Aiden. Visitation one hour prior to service. Interment Sunset Memorial Park, Minneapolis. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to Stillwater Good Samaritan, 1119 N. Owens St., Stillwater, MN 55082.
