John Paul Greenberg

In Loving Memory of John Greenberg, a resilient soul who grew up on a farm in Wisconsin, embodying a work ethic he took with him as a devoted teacher in the Stillwater district. With a passion for education, he dedicated over 30 years to teaching history and industrial technology, coaching soccer and volleyball, and advising several student organizations, leaving an indelible mark on countless lives.
Known for his unique approach to teaching, he wore historical costumes and matching facial hair, bringing the past to life in the classroom. Even in retirement, he continued to captivate passers-by and embarrass his children by dressing up in lederhosen for Oktoberfest or an afternoon lunch at the Gasthaus.
Beyond the classroom, retirement brought about a new chapter where John found joy in unconventional hobbies of creating endless house and yard projects and using his tractor as a go-kart. He loved the Stillwater community and spent months crafting derby cars and custom t-shirts for lumberjack days. He also frequented local coffee shops and candy stores, creating cherished memories with loved ones.
John faced the adversities of complicated blood disorders and cancers with an unwavering resilience and desire to live. On February 25 illness forced him to miss his grandson's hockey game. It was then that he embarked on his final journey, bravely confronting the challenges of a relentless blood disorder. Despite the valiant efforts of medical professionals, John's battle concluded on March 10 surrounded by family.
Survived by his children Nate, J.D., Anna (Ted Conover), Gretchen (Nate) Vrolijk, grandsons Case and Arie Vrolijk, and too many family and friends to count, John leaves behind a true pack of hooligans. His passing, attributed to a rare blood disorder, serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of blood donation. In honor of John's memory, the family kindly requests that friends and well-wishers donate blood to replenish the over 40 blood transfusions that sustained him in his final two weeks.
John will be remembered for his commitment to teaching, coaching, and more than a couple of wild antics. May John rest in peace.
A Celebration of John's life will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, March 16, 2024 with visitation one hour prior all at Simonet Funeral Home, 6429 Osgood Ave N., Stillwater, MN 55082. An informal reception to immediately follow at the 3rd Street Post in Stillwater.
