John was born in Fargo, North Dakota on April 23, 1969, to Francis John and Mary L. Magill. He attended Nativity Elementary School and Shanley High School in Fargo and graduated from Shattuck-St. Mary's School in Faribault, Minnesota. He attended St. John's University in Collegeville, MN, receiving a bachelor's degree. John had a career in sales and business development, working at several different companies including positions at West Publishing and IQ Biometrix. He had an entrepreneurial spirit and co-founded two start-ups and worked in business development roles in several tech-oriented start-ups.
John married Kathleen Reding of Stillwater, MN on December 16, 2006. They were married at St. Mary's Catholic Church. John and Kathy went on to have two children, Cecilia "Cece" Magill, born in 2008, and Mary Louise (Molly) Magill, born in 2017.
John was predeceased by his father, Frank Magill, who passed away in 2013, and his mother, Mary Magill, who passed away in 2016, and his niece Kaitlyn Magill. He is survived by his loving wife Kathy and their daughters Cece and Molly, and his siblings the Honorable Francis J. (Margaret) Magill, Jr. of St. Louis Park, MN, Marguerite "Meg" (the HonorableFrancis) Connolly of Minneapolis, MN, R. Daniel Magill of Denver, CO, Mary Elizabeth (Leon Szeptycki) Magill of Charlottesville, VA, and Robert Timlin (Amy Frisch) Magill of New York, NY, and numerous nieces and nephews.
John was a force of nature - a charismatic, energetic, and joyful man who had a special way with people. He enjoyed an active lifestyle, running, tennis, and especially time on the water. John loved to spend summer days boating and swimming on the St. Croix River with his family and friends. And Lake Melissa, where he whiled away countless hours sailing with his dad and brothers, always held a very special place in his heart. John fiercely loved his wife and daughters, and as he fought a too-long illness, he showed us all that fighting and resilient spirit. He had a lust for life, and few who knew him, and all who loved him, will ever forget his infectious smile, his full-hearted laughter, his boundless compassion, or his love of going shirtless. With John, they truly broke the mold. He will be forever missed and never forgotten.
