Lloyd Edward Newman, Jr.
June 10, 1950 - February 4, 2025
With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Lloyd Edward Newman, Jr., who left us on February 4, 2025, after a nine-year battle with dementia. Born on June 10, 1950, in Hibbing, Minnesota, to Lloyd and Marion Newman, he grew up alongside his three siblings, Laura, Ronald, and Rosalyn, who all survive him.
Fate stepped in on his birthday when, as a teenager in the hospital, he met the love of his life, Mary Theresa Balint, while they were both patients at Gillette Hospital. From that moment on, they were inseparable. They married on March 17, 1972, and spent 44 years together, lovingly (and hilariously) driving each other-and everyone around them-crazy with their antics.
Lloyd was always in motion, never one to sit still. He dedicated nearly 40 years as a union member and employee of the State of Minnesota, retiring as manager of the central stores warehouse. His tireless work ethic left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Beyond work, Lloyd's passions were endless. He transformed Mary's yard into a breathtaking oasis, often salvaging plants from the town compost, his loyal dog by his side. A gifted woodworker and carpenter, he took pride in his projects-building decks, home additions, furniture, and even an epic snow fort that became the neighborhood bus stop for an entire Minnesota winter.
His signature look was blue jeans, a flannel shirt, and New Balance sneakers. He had an unwavering love for old cars, recalling details well into his dementia. He also loved music, especially 1960s classics, and never tired of watching The Andy Griffith Show and Bonanza.
Lloyd was a lovable grump and a devoted father to Shaundrea (Nate) Kenyon and Rachael (Tony) Peltier and a cherished grandfather to Adrianna, Callie, Isabella, Jordan, Victoria, Nathan, and Andrew. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary T. Newman (Feb. 2016), his mother, Marion C. Newman (Dec. 2016), and his father, Lloyd E. Newman, Sr. (June 1979).
In later years, Lloyd embraced adventure. He took a cross-country road trip with his sisters, visited Belgium and Ireland, swam in the cold Atlantic Ocean in York, Maine, and lived for a time in New Hampshire before his dementia required advanced care. Lloyd spent the final year of his life in the compassionate care of the Encore Advanced Memory Care team in Mahtomedi, and his family extends their deepest gratitude to Katie Strand and her team for their kindness, humor, and unwavering support.
Lloyd will be missed terribly, but his family is grateful that his suffering is over. We know you're back to full strength, reunited with your wife Mary - ready to pick up right where you left off, bickering and joking.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 26, 2025 at St. Jude of the Lake Catholic Church in Mahtomedi with visitation one hour prior to the Mass to celebrate Lloyd's life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Humane Society of Stillwater, MN.
