Lyle Carl Doerr

Lyle Carl Doerr, age 92, of Stillwater, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 5, 2023. He was born on October 20, 1931, and was a lifelong resident of Stillwater. He graduated from Stillwater High School in 1949, attended Macalester College and the University of Minnesota where he studied architectural design. He worked in that capacity for 16 years and went on to work for Washington County as their project manager (Restoration of the Historic Courthouse, Co. Libraries, Gov't Ctr., new jail) until his retirement in 1997. Lyle enlisted in the MN Army National Guard at the age of 17. He was called to active duty in 1951 (Camp Rucker, Alabama). He served his tour of duty, came home and re-enlisted. He was a graduate of the US Army Infantry School, US Army Chemical Corps School, US Army Command and General Staff College and the US Army War College. He served in a variety of Command and Staff positions in the 47th Infantry Division, finishing as Assistant Adjutant General. He retired from the military at age 60, having attained the rank of Major General (Brevet). He played an instrumental role in establishing what eventually became the Minnesota Military Museum at Camp Ripley. He was also a member of SAR (Sons of the American Revolution). He was a lifelong member of Salem Lutheran Church in Stillwater where he taught Sunday School, was a Buckaroo leader, Church Council Member, President of the Congregation and Chairman of the new church building project in 1962. Lyle was very patriotic, had strong faith and loved the home he designed and built in 1957, where he resided for 65 years. He dearly loved his children and grandchildren and was so proud of them all. He had a love of music, enjoyed cooking, fishing, gardening, carpentry, Twins baseball and military history, having served on the Stillwater Military History Project Committee for the new Armory. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Dorothy; sons, Lyle Jr., Larry (Evie), Jonathan; daughter, Jocelyn (Jon) Fahrendorff; grandchildren, Kaylyn (Eric), Alex (Savannah), Zachary (Natalie), Justin, Joshua, and Ryan; sister, Lois Hemenway; sisters-in-law, Audrey and Jan; nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frances and Carl Doerr. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, November 13, 2023 with visitation one hour prior to the service all at Salem Lutheran Church, 14940 62nd St. N., Stillwater, MN 55082. Private family burial at Salem Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to Salem Lutheran Church, the Washington County Historical Society, or donor's choice.
