Mary Ann Kern

d. May 26, 2017

Mary Ann (McHugh) Kern passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on May 26, 2017. Mary was born on April 19, 1933 to Margaret McHugh of Goodhue, MN. She was raised and educated in Goodhue before moving to Minneapolis where she worked at the University of Minnesota, School of Engineering as a secretary. It was there that she met Glaydon R. Kern, her husband of 52 years. They married on November 27, 1954 and soon after left the Midwest for Glaydon’s service as a dentist in the Air Force. They moved to St. James, MN in 1958 where they raised their four children. Mary spent her days cultivating a home for her family, volunteering with the Red Cross, playing in the local bridge and bowling leagues, and reading. They moved to Battle Lake, MN in 1977 where they spent many years surrounded by family at their lake home. In 2005 they moved to Boutwells Landing in Oak Park Heights, MN. Glaydon passed away shortly after their move, and Mary continued to live with gusto until her sudden passing. Mary’s greatest loves in life were good food, good laughs and time with friends and family. Wherever she was you could hear laughter, as Mary made friends everywhere she went. Mary was very passionate about her Irish heritage and loved to share a ballad, a limerick, or a pint with anyone she met. Mary was afflicted with Macular Degeneration in her final years, but she never let her lack of vision slow her down. Her miniature schnauzer Maggie was a great comfort and joy to her in the years following Glaydon’s passing. Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Glaydon, her stillborn son, and her parents. She is survived by her four children Greg (Cheryl) Kern, Julie (Michael) Lesher, Stephanie (Peter) Christianson, and Sarah (William) Moore, as well as ten grandchildren Brianna(Kim) and Stephanie(Holst) Kern, Mary and Patrick Lesher, Gabriel, Mathias, Samuel and Sarah(Tucher) Christianson, Emily and Jameson Moore, and eight, very soon to be ten, great-grandchildren whom she loved dearly. Funeral Mass is at 11 a.m., on Saturday, July 22, 2017 at St. Columbkill Catholic Church, 36483 Co 47 Blvd, Goodhue, MN 55027. Please send memorials to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation.
