Stephen John Mccarten

June 2, 1945 — August 10, 2021

Stephen J. McCarten, 76, died after an illness with cancer; August 10, 2021.

He was in hospice at The Estates at Greeley in Stillwater MN since June 2021.

Steve was born in Stillwater, spent many years in Colorado and returned to Stillwater in 2013.

Steve graduated from Stillwater High School and Regis University. He owned an electronic cable installation wholesale company in Denver with customers around the world including the US Military. When back in Stillwater he sourced and built industrial-chic lighting and other electronic items. Unique creations. Pure Steve McCarten.

Steve, like his father "Mac" and mother Helen, was a proud and knowledgeable citizen of Stillwater. On a Stillwater trolley tour in July, Steve pointed out to his daughters that the guide, a mere mortal, was occasionally misinformed. Steve had a high Stillwater and people IQ which he honed as an amateur Stillwater historian - and by talking with virtually every citizen he encountered. Then, whether a day or 10 years later, he remembered the details of those conversations. Steve had a rare and valuable gift. He listened.

Winter or summer Steve was outdoors. He was a skilled sailor, water-skier, snow skier and serious western horseman and cowboy. Steve was well known in Mahtomedi where he spent summers as a young man at his parent's cabin. And he spent time on the St. Croix River where he had lifelong friends on both the Minnesota and Wisconsin side.

Stephen was preceded in death by his older brother Michael, his father Dr. Francis McCarten, and his mother Helen (Stack) McCarten. Nephew, Colin Casey and niece Meg McCarten.

Stephen is survived by two young women who proudly call him their father. Bethany (Mike) Maciuba of Waxahachie TX and Jill (Khalid) Jbili of Denver CO. Beth and Jill were able to visit Steve twice in recent weeks including the day Steve died. Beth and Jill have three children who will miss their grandfather.

Stephen is also survived by his sister Mary (McCarten) Casey of Alexandria VA, nephew Kirk Casey (Siobhan) and family of Alexandria VA, niece Molly Casey Duffy, (Brian) and family of Alexandria VA and niece Ann Erickson of Boulder, Co. He will be missed by many cousins especially his cousin and friend, Jim Stack, and by life-long close friends in Stillwater.

A family service has been held.

For 60 years Steve dealt with effects of narcolepsy and cataplexy. Memorials or donations would be welcome to WakeUp Narcolepsy.
