Thomas "Tom" John Gouras, beloved artist, craftsman, chef, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on November 2, 2024. Born on March 20, 1960, in St. Paul, Tom lived a life rich in creativity, friendship, and service to others. A proud graduate of Augsburg University with degrees in art and cultural studies, Tom was an intellectual craftsman whose artistic vision was shaped by his deep appreciation for culture and nature. His passion for art found expression through painting and woodworking, with his work particularly influenced by his time spent in Italy. His paintings captured the vibrant essence of Italian life, from countryside religious festivals to the daily rhythms of Roman streets, while his custom-designed furniture pieces reflected his masterful craftsmanship.
Tom's creative spirit extended into the culinary arts, where he worked as a skilled chef, bringing the same attention to detail and artistry to his cooking as he did to his artwork. Later, in his part-time work at Simonet's Furniture, he enjoyed delivering furniture and sharing stories with his colleagues and friends - turning every delivery into an opportunity for camaraderie and conversation.
Tom was a cherished fellow in his recovery community, maintaining 36 years of sobriety while helping others as a sponsor. His readiness to serve and support others was a defining characteristic of his life, touching many lives. An avid outdoorsman, Tom found joy in fishing trips to Northern Wisconsin with close friends.
His love for nature was reflected both in his landscape paintings and in his deep connection to his Native American heritage. Tom was also a passionate music enthusiast, curating an impressive collection of rock and roll albums.
Tom is survived by is brother, Timothy James Gouras, and a wide circle of friends who became family. He was preceded in death by his mother, Patsy Lee Gouras (née Henthorne) and father, John Thomas Gouras.
