William L. Nelson, "Nelly", age 85, of Stillwater, MN. Picture of Nelly Nelson, William L "Nelly" Age 85 of Stillwater, MN Loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, neighbor and friend. Passed away surrounded by his family on January 4th. Nelly was born on December 18th, 1924 and was a lifetime resident of Stillwater. Nelly entered the military service in 1943. Nelly later attended civil engineering school in Socorro, New Mexico. Further stateside duty was served in Washington, Louisiana, Kansas and Massachusetts. He went overseas in 1944 and was the recipient of the Purple Heart medal. He was in Scotland, England, France, Germany and Austria-returning home in 1945. In 1986, after more than 40 years of service for Andersen Windows, Nelly retired. Nelly was an avid golfer, card player (especially bridge and the German game Yass) and Bocce Ball. Nelly prided himself with making a new friend everyday. His positive spirit and energy made him a local favorite in the community. Nelly was a member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus, Honorary member of the Stillwater Country Club and St. Michael's Church. Nelly will be missed for his humor, kindness and friendship to all. Nelly is survived by his beloved spouse of 48 years, Lois; his daughters Mary Jo Nelson (Mike Neuman), Carol Smith (Mike), Gayle Nelson and his two precious grandchildren, Nell and Kalle Smith. Visitation Thursday, January 7th at Simonet Funeral Home, 6429 Osgood Ave. N. in Stillwater from 4-7pm. Mass of Christian Burial 11am Friday, January 8th, at St. Michaels Catholic Church , 611 South Third Street, Stillwater. Visitation one hour prior to the mass. Military service and burial will follow in the spring.
